PGMC members-only field trip · Glenn County, California

A private landowner is opening ground to our club that nobody else gets to collect. They turn it over with heavy machinery, so the jasper is fresh every year.

Why this trip is different

Ground other rockhounds aren't allowed to collect, freshly turned every year.

Our club, through Mike, has built a rare relationship with a private landowner who supports what we do. They give us access to jasper other people can't collect.

They also tend to overturn the collection sites with heavy machinery, so new material comes up every year. If you came last year, you'll find different rock this time.

Field notes
Lapidary grade

These stones are stunning once they're cut. Bring your finds to the club shop and make something with them. That's the whole point.

The perfect day

Skies clearing right after a heavy rain. The storm washes every rock clean, and the whole field shows its color.

If it's hot

Bring a lot of water, plenty of food, a pump sprayer and a hat.

Catch the weather right and there aren't enough buckets in the world. Choose wisely.

Field trick

Bring something to spray with

Dry jasper on the ground looks dusty and dull. Wet it and the real color comes up: the reds, the golds, the veins. That's how you spot the keepers before they go in the bucket.

A pump sprayer works great. A spray bottle is fine. Either way, bring extra water to fill it.
